Why nonsense Latin instead of real copy
Placeholder text exists to keep attention on the design. Readable English in a mockup pulls reviewers into editing the words — you present a layout and get feedback on a sentence you wrote as a placeholder.
Lorem ipsum has been used by typesetters since the 1500s, and the text itself is a scrambled passage from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. It is not truly random; it approximates the letter distribution and word lengths of Latin, which sits close enough to English to look right without being readable.
When to use something else:
- Testing a real interface. Use realistic content. Lorem ipsum has no long words, no numbers, no URLs, no names — so it hides every layout bug that real data would expose.
- Anything a client might see unsupervised. Placeholder text has shipped to production more than once.
- Non-Latin scripts. Latin tells you nothing about how the layout handles Arabic, Thai or Chinese.
Use it for typography and layout studies. Use real content for anything you intend to trust.
Picking a realistic length
Generating the right amount matters more than most people bother with, because layouts break at the extremes rather than in the middle.
Useful reference points:
- Meta description — 25 words
- Blog intro paragraph — 40 to 60 words
- Standard article paragraph — 50 to 80 words
- Product description — 100 to 150 words
- Full blog post — 800 to 1,500 words
Test the extremes deliberately. Fill a card with three words and with three hundred. That is where you find the layout that collapses when a title is short, or the one that overflows when a description runs long.
