About this tool
Build the Open Graph and Twitter Card tags that control how your link looks when someone shares it, with a preview of the resulting card. Getting these right is the difference between a rich image card and a bare blue link.
How to use it
- Fill in the title, description, image URL and canonical URL.
- Check the preview for each platform.
- Copy the complete tag block into your head.
Image requirements, and the ratio everyone gets wrong
1200 × 630 pixels is the standard — a 1.91:1 ratio, which is what Facebook, LinkedIn and X all render as a large card.
Where it goes wrong:
- Under 600 × 315 and most platforms fall back to a small square thumbnail, which is a dramatically weaker result.
- Over 5 MB and some crawlers skip the image entirely.
- Relative URLs do not work. A crawler fetching your page from outside has no base to resolve
/og.pngagainst. It must be absolute and publicly reachable. - Behind auth or a firewall means the crawler gets a 403 and shows nothing. This is why staging sites never preview correctly.
Safe area matters because different platforms crop differently. Keep text away from the outer 10% — a title centred in the frame survives every crop; one near an edge does not.
Why your preview will not update
You fix the tags, reshare the link, and the old card still appears. This is almost always caching, not a mistake in your markup.
Every platform caches aggressively — for days in some cases — and none of them re-fetch just because you shared again.
Force a refresh with the platform's own tool:
- Facebook — Sharing Debugger, "Scrape Again"
- LinkedIn — Post Inspector
- X — historically the Card Validator; now generally refreshes on its own within a day
- WhatsApp uses Facebook's cache, so the Sharing Debugger clears it too
Slack and Discord cache per-workspace and are hard to flush. The reliable trick is to append a harmless query parameter — ?v=2 — which they treat as a new URL.
Test before you publish widely. A campaign link shared to thousands with a broken card cannot be fixed retroactively for anyone who already saw it.
Frequently asked questions
- What image size should I use?
- 1200 by 630 pixels is the safe standard, giving a 1.91:1 ratio that works across platforms. Keep it under 5MB and use an absolute URL — relative paths do not resolve for crawlers.
- Do I need Twitter tags if I have Open Graph?
- Not strictly — X falls back to Open Graph when Twitter tags are missing. Add twitter:card if you want a large image card specifically, since the fallback often renders small.
- My preview is not updating when I share.
- Platforms cache aggressively. Use the relevant debugger — Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector — to force a re-scrape after changing tags.
