About this tool
Add two or more PDFs, put them in the order you want and download one combined document. The files are read and joined by your browser, so contracts, statements and scans are never sent to a server.
How to use it
- Drop your PDFs onto the page, or click to choose them.
- Use the arrows to put them in order, and remove any you do not need.
- Click Merge, then save merged.pdf.
What is kept, and what is not
Pages are copied across as they are. Text stays selectable and searchable, images and vector graphics are untouched, and each page keeps its own size and rotation, so a document of mixed A4 and landscape pages merges without any resizing.
Three things do not come across:
- Bookmarks. The outline panel of each source file is not carried into the merged one.
- Interactive form fields. The pages look the same, but fields that could be filled in are no longer live.
- Document-level settings such as the title, author and any security options.
If a form has to stay fillable, merging is the wrong operation for it. For everything else, which is most contracts, statements, receipts and scans, the result is the pages you put in.
Keeping the merged file a sensible size
Merging does not recompress anything, so the output is roughly the sum of the inputs. If the result is too large to email, the weight is almost always in scanned images.
Two ways to deal with that: scan again at a lower resolution, or build the document from images you have already shrunk. Run the pictures through the image compressor first and assemble them with JPG to PDF, then merge the result with your other files.
Order, and what to do after merging
Files are joined in the order listed, and the pages inside each file stay in their own order. Once merged, the next job is usually one of these:
- Put pages in a different order, or drop a few, with Organize PDF pages.
- Pull a section back out with Split PDF.
- Turn pages that came in sideways with Rotate PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. The files are opened by JavaScript on this page and joined in memory. You can check this in the Network tab of your browser's developer tools: choosing and merging files makes no request containing them.
Is there a limit on file size or the number of files?
The site sets none. The practical limit is your device's memory: dozens of ordinary documents merge in a few seconds, while several hundred megabytes of scans can be slow on a phone.
Why does it say a file is password-protected?
An encrypted PDF cannot be read without its password. Open it in a PDF viewer, save or print an unprotected copy if you are permitted to, and add that copy instead.
Will the merged PDF keep my bookmarks and form fields?
No. Page content is preserved exactly, but bookmarks, fillable form fields and document properties from the source files are not carried into the merged file.
